About DRI
A new wave of technological innovation is unfolding across the world, at a rate that outpaces developments in policies, standards, guidelines and procedures. The exponential increase in information collected has led to a need for high quality data to inform decision making. But as much as data offers new opportunities, it also poses new risks. Those risks can be magnified by the vulnerability of affected populations. This is why we need data responsibility.
DRI provides actionable evidence on how to maximize the value of data while preventing harm to vulnerable people. By bringing together leading experts in the field of data responsibility to coordinate, curate and conduct research.

What is Data Responsibility? |
We define data responsibility as maximizing value of data while preventing harm to vulnerable people through legitimate use of data throughout the data value chain.
We are attentive to the various power dynamics inherent to the use of data that can affect vulnerable people. We believe that data can be used legitimately when it allows people to have agency, participate and be represented, when handling is transparent, and when actors hold each other accountable. To do so, actors need to ensure capacity, competency, and capability throughout the data lifecycle. The Triple C are indisociable elements of a successful data responsibility approach. |
What we do |
DRI compiles and makes available existing research and information on data responsibility in practice. It does so along specific curating standards. DRI members work to identify knowledge gaps, and to promote a collective research agenda on data responsibility. Lastly, we take on an observatory role in the advancement of data responsibility approaches.
